Game 1 Summary :
The 2009 season got off to a perfect start for the Liverpool Trojans, taking both games in style from the Oldham North Stars. Unusually for April, the sun was shining and the sky was clear. Let's hope it lasts.
The Trojans didn't have their full squad available, so debuts were given to new guys Andy Heap and John Hill. Both Andy and John enjoyed a great day, with a couple of hits and good contributions in the field. The Trojans also welcomed back Alan Alger to center field after an absence of nearly three years. And at the bottom of the barrel, veteran catcher Rob Alger enjoyed a chance to show there's life in the old dog yet.
Martin Godsall dominated on the mound and was rarely troubled, giving up just four hits with eight strikeouts. The North Stars played with a good team spirit but the Trojans offence was too hot to handle. Paul Smith shone at the plate with 5 hits, including two doubles. His fielding at shortstop was also outstanding as was the team's defensive play generally.
The Trojans maintained a high level of play throughout the game with great contributions from Dave Martin-Baez at second, Ian Blease at third and player manager Mike Waisome at first. Game 2

Game 2 Summary :
The Trojans started the second game with Godsall on the mound still fresh, having only threw 48 pitches in the first game. Once again, he overpowered the North Stars with a display of accurate power pitching, giving up one run off three hits. The Trojans hitters also got off to a great start with a ten run first inning, taking the pressure off.
Godsall was replaced on the mound in the third by the big left hander, Mike Waisome. By this time the game was effectively over, however Waisome still put on a powerful pitching display to shut the North Stars down restricting them to just one hit.
Paul Smith was again the star at the plate with a homer in the first followed by a double and a couple of base hits.
Next week the Trojans take on the Menwith Hill Patriots at Bootle Stadium, which may prove to be a sterner test for the stars of Liverpool. Click here for photo gallery.. |
