Game 1 Summary :
The Liverpool Trojans took on the reigning National League North champions, the Menwith Hill Patriots, with several key players unavailable. With the main diamond out of action, a makeshift diamond was set up, thanks to the hard work of the Menwith ground crew, in particular, Dave Criss.
Liverpool got off to an early start with two runs in the top of the first, RBI's for Ben Ridley and Mike Waisome. Ridley, only starting his second game for the Trojans, quickly settled in and retired the side in order to end the first. The Trojans lead was halved by the end of the second, until Waisome drove in another run in the top of the third to restore a two run advantage.
The Trojans then lost their catcher, Paul Mason, when a bunted ball came off the bat and hit Paul in the face. He was given first aid by the on site medics for a suspected broken nose. Mr Mason soon recovered and can now call himself a seasoned player, with the scars to prove it.
The Patriots will always field a strong hitting side and soon began to apply the pressure. Two unearned runs in the top of the sixth however, maintained the Trojans a two advantage going into the seventh. The conditions began to worsen as Menwith came storming back in the seventh to tie the game and take it into extra innings.
Mike Waisome changed the line up for the top of the eighth, bringing in Ivan Peychev to play first base, and it proved to be a significant change as Peychev drove in two runs to restore the Trojans two run advantage. Waisome then came on to pitch the final inning. The big left handed pitcher gave a clinic in the pick off play to first, picking off two base runners to leave the Patriots with two down and the bases empty. The game ended with a fly ball to center, safely gathered by Rob Orme.
Sadly, the second game of the double header was abandoned in the forth inning due to persistent rain. The Trojans were seven three ahead when the game was called, with Peychev's grand slam being cancelled out. The game will be rescheduled later in the season.
