Game Summary :
Menwith Hill Patriots were the visitors to Bootle Stadium on a day that resembled mid November, rather than mid August. The rain relented long enough to set the field up, but as soon as game time came, so did the rain.
The Patriots batted first and put a run on the board, thanks to some sloppy play by the Trojans infield. The conditions did play their part, but it was the same for both teams. The Patriots then shut the Trojans offence down with some good infield play and strong pitching from Brian Zinda.
The Trojans tied the game in the third with a base hit from Mike Waisome, driving in Ian Smith. But neither team was able to sustain any pressure, and the game remained a low scoring affair. Both pitchers were on their game despite the poor conditions.
A series of base hits gave Menwith the lead in the fifth, as Liverpool continued to struggle against the pitching of Zinda. The Trojans did rally in the bottom of the seventh, when Paul Mason kept the game alive fighting off several foul balls to draw a two out walk. A walk for Ian Smith, followed by a base hit from Dave Mercado set the table for the Trojans power hitter, Mike Waisome. With bases loaded, two out, Waisome grounded out to second to end the game. If only..
The second game of the double header was abandoned after two innings play. The rain was really cold by this time, anyone fancy a beer instead.
The abandoned game will be made up next week at Menwith, The Trojans were already due to travel there to make up a previous wash out. Click here for photo gallery..
