Game Summary :
The Liverpool Trojans took part in the first inter league game of the season, traveling to Division 1 outfit, Bolton Blaze. The condition of the field left a lot to be desired, the outfield in particular was overgrown and difficult for the fielders. Despite the poor conditions, the Trojans were looking to stretch their unbeaten season.
Tyler Smith, on the hill for Bolton, got off to a strong start, limiting the Trojans to one unearned run, striking out two in the inning. An error at third, followed by a hit from Sherlock set the table for Tyler Smith to drive in both runners with a three run shot to give Bolton the early lead.
Center Fielder Rob Orme must have been wearing a target today, as the first of two pitches slammed into his back giving the Trojans a baserunner in the second. RBI's for Kwang Shik Choi and Paul Mason tied the game going into the bottom of the second. However, Bolton soon regained the lead hitting well off Trojans starter, Martin Godsall. Matthew Norburn driving in the go ahead run.
A dropped third strike in the top of the third, saw Martin Godsall advance to first to start a seven run rally for the Trojans. Hits for Ivan Peychev, Dave Mercado, Rob Orme, Ian Smith and Kwang Shik Choi, saw Liverpool take command of the game. Paul Mason, playing in his first game after breaking his broken nose, made a good catch behind home plate to help keep Bolton scoreless in the third.
Dave Mercado doubled to start the fourth, followed by some strong hitting from the Trojans, RBI's from Choi, Mason, Ian Smith and Harry Wren extended Liverpool's lead. A couple of hits and a second RBI for Norburn was never going be enough to trouble the Trojans, as Godsall's strike out rate increased.
Jamie Sherlock replaced Smith on the mound as the Trojans took their foot off the gas. The fifth ended scoreless, however the Trojans weren't finished yet. Ian Blease, making a welcome return, started the sixth with a lead off walk, followed by a second walk for Ian Smith. A passed ball scored Blease as the Trojans rallied again to score four more in the top inning. Despite giving up a couple of key hits early on, Martin Godsall ended the game strongly on eleven strikeout's giving Liverpool a commanding lead at the top of the table.
Next Sunday, the Trojans take on second placed team, Manchester Eagles, who travel to Bootle Stadium for the first time this season. Fisrt pitch of the double header is 12 p.m. Sunday, June 10th. WP: Martin Godsall
